House flies are one of the most annoying pests, buzzing around and contaminating your food. Your trusty fly swatter may work for the occasional fly that accidentally gets in, but what happens when a whole swarm appears in your house?
Why do I need fly control in Waukesha?
Flies feast on decaying matter. Most of the time, this is a good thing! Flies keep our outdoor spaces clean and free of waste and rot. They'll eat anything gross: roadkill and pet waste, to rotting fruit and garbage. Inside your house, though, this isn't great. As organic matter begins decaying, it grows bacteria, and that bacteria can get you sick.
Because flies don't care about the difference between garbage and the food you're eating, they can contaminate the food in your kitchen with germs and bacteria they pick up from garbage cans and pet waste. At least 200 pathogens that are associated with illnesses in humans and other animals can be deposited throughout your home by fly invaders.
Why are there so many flies in my house?
Ever wonder what makes your home attractive to flies? You might think that keeping your house clean is enough to protect you, but these super-smelling pests can sniff out any source of decay you may not realize is in your house!
Common culprits for fly infestations can be anything from a particularly stinky garbage can to fruit left on the counter for a day or two too long, even if it is still ripe and edible. Some flies can smell hints of decay from miles away, making that stinky trash can or slightly bruised peach an open invitation to your home.
While flies are most common during warmer weather, once it cools down, they can start seeking out heat in our homes, making them more likely to come indoors and hunker down for the winter.
How can I prevent a fly infestation in my home?
If you want to protect your home from an infestation, there are a few steps you can take to make your home less appealing.
- Manage Your Waste: Garbage cans should have lids that seal tightly, and bags should be removed as soon as they smell bad, even if they aren't all the way full. Even a whiff of decay is enough to attract flies.
- Keep it Neat: Don't leave food out for longer than necessary and clean up food messes and spills promptly. In addition to attracting flies, old food also makes a great place for flies to lay their eggs, meaning a couple of flies snacking on leftovers can quickly become a feasting swarm.
- Reduce Moisture: Moist surfaces are perfect places for bacteria to thrive, attracting flies who feast on the decay they cause.
- Seal Entry Points: Flies don't need an open door or window to get into your home! Check for cracks around door and window frames and make sure to seal up any you find. If you like having the windows open to let a breeze in, make sure your windows have sturdy screens with no gaps around the window frame.
- Keep Air Moving: Despite their name, these pests aren't great fliers. Moving air makes it harder for them to stay on course, so keep ceiling fans on, set up some box fans around the house, and keep windows open (and screens closed!) on nice, windy days.
