Mosquito Misting Systems Can Reduce Your Horses’ Chance of Disease

Did you know that your horses are susceptible to being infected with West Nile virus just the same as humans? So far, according to a report issued by the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, there have been ten new West Nile virus positive cases in Texas. A misting system manufactured by MistAway® and installed by Mosquito Squad of Victoria can dramatically reduce the mosquito population in your equestrian center.

It is important to keep your horses vaccinated against diseases such as West Nile virus. It’s also important to reduce their contact with these pesky, bloodsucking, disease carrying insects. According to the same report, the effects of WNV on horses is quite dramatic. The report states, “Clinical signs for WNV include flulike signs, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed; fine and coarse muscle and skin fasciculations (twitching); hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to touch and sound); changes in mentation (mentality), when horses look like they are daydreaming or “just not with it”; occasional somnolence (drowsiness); propulsive walking (driving or pushing forward, often without control); and “spinal” signs, including asymmetrical weakness. Some horses show asymmetrical or symmetrical ataxia. Equine mortality rate can be as high as 30-40%.”

With such debilitating diseases like West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, keeping your equestrian center mosquito free is your best defense. A professionally installed Mistaway® mosquito misting system can ensure your horses and livestock aren’t constantly being fed upon by mosquitoes. With advancements in mosquito misting technology, your system can operate autonomously and will even alert us if it’s running low on the mosquito repellent solution or if there’s a gash in the system’s line. With it, you can leave all the worrying to us, Mosquito Squad of Victoria.
