Chikungunya Makes Victoria Mosquito Control More Important Than Ever

As many of you have seen on the news recently, there is a sudden uptick in chikungunya infections in Texas. Merely 4 days after the first case of chikungunya in Texas was confirmed, another 4 cases were reported. The reported infections are believed to have been contracted by people who traveled outside the country and were bitten by mosquitoes in said countries they traveled to. According to this KXAN article, the cases were confirmed in Travis, Williamson, Bexar, Gonzales and Harris counties. While none of the cases were transmitted here in Texas, there are reports in Florida of mosquitoes infecting people with chikungunya; so we know the illness is being transmitted within the continental U.S. The same mosquito responsible for transmitting West Nile is also capable of transmitting chikungunya; the Asian tiger mosquito, and it is currently in Texas as well.

Chikungunya is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause fever and severe joint pain. In fact, the word chikungunya roughly translates to “that which bends up”, which describes the debilitating pain infected people suffer. According to an article in the National Post, “The virus is not spread person to person, but rather by the bite of the Asian tiger mosquito or the yellow fever mosquito.” So far there have been more than 230 chikungunya cases reported in the US this year, all but 2 of these cases were instances where travelers were infected outside of the US. In the same article, it is mentioned that entomologists are particularly concerned about a strain of chikungunya that spreads easily in Asian tiger mosquitoes. There currently is no cure or vaccine for the virus. While scientists and the FDA scramble to come up with a cure and/or vaccine for this new mosquito-borne illness, it could be years before the vaccine is available. Mosquito control and avoidance are the best current options.
