Springtime Pest Behavior in Water Mill, NY: A Guide

Most pest problems announce themselves, one way or another. You see ants on the counter, a wasp nest under the eaves, or mosquitoes swarming at dusk.
In Water Mill, the problem with spring is that everything announces itself at once.
Ticks have been active for weeks before you notice. They can wake up as soon as temperatures rise above freezing. Carpenter ants, meanwhile, have been chewing ever since the wood they live in thawed. And if your property sat empty over the winter, mice might have had the place to themselves since Thanksgiving.
Water Mill properties tend to be large, often agricultural or horse-related, and frequently vacant for months. Combine that with the fact that the Hamptons are generally a difficult place for pest control, and you could be looking at some serious pest problems in the spring.
But there’s a lot that you can do now, and we’ll give you a quick overview in this post.
Ticks Are Active Earlier Than You Think
Deer ticks on eastern Long Island become active as soon as temperatures hold above 35°F. That's not a typo—thirty-five degrees. By the time anything else on this list is moving, ticks have been active for weeks.
Water Mill is next to a lot of farmland, horse paddocks, and wooded lot borders. Without a plan for tick control, deer ticks can quickly overrun a property. It doesn’t help that both adults and the hard-to-spot, poppy-seed-sized juveniles can transmit Lyme disease.
Reducing the adult population before they give birth to nymph-stage ticks is one of the best things you can do to reduce your odds of catching Lyme disease.
Carpenter Ants Come Out of the Woodwork Next
Carpenter ants don't eat wood. They live in it, hollowing out galleries to nest inside. They overwinter in damp wood, which is the kind found in older estate homes, barns, pool houses, and guest cottages.
When it warms up, they get to tunneling again. And the damage they can cause is silent and really adds up. You won't see it until you see the ants themselves: large, black, showing up indoors near kitchens and bathrooms. By that point, the colony has been established for a while.
There are also pavement ants and odorous house ants. They’re less dramatic, but they’re arguably more annoying. They follow moisture trails indoors, and once a scout finds a reliable source, it takes a lot of work to bulldoze their pheromone highway.
Then Come the Rodents
For seasonal properties, therodent control situation in spring is really a reckoning for what happened over winter. Mice that entered in October have likely been breeding in the walls, attic, or barn ever since. They’re quick about it, too, with females being able to produce a new litter every three weeks. It’s no exaggeration to say that a pair of mice in the fall can be dozens by spring.
Look for droppings, gnaw marks on wiring, and shredded material used as nesting. If you find evidence of rats or mice, seal every entry point you can find. Then call an expert for help because this problem is really hard to solve DIY.
Termite Swarms Appear in April and May
Subterranean termite swarms happen in April and May on Long Island. Swarmers are winged termites that emerge briefly to start new colonies. You'll find discarded wings near windows and doors, or mud tubes running up foundation walls.
On seasonal properties, termite damage can accumulate for up to six months at a time before someone is there to notice. So if you see evidence of termites, call for help because immediate action is necessary and further damage is not likely to be covered by homeowners’ insurance.
