F.A.Q.

Why do lady beetles pile up on the warm sides of homes?

Asian lady beetles gather on sun-warmed walls in fall as they search for protected places to spend the winter.

When the weather starts to turn, Asian lady beetles, like other overwintering insects, start to look for warmth. To them, that means going for sunlit walls, often those of a light color. That’s why south- or west-facing walls tend to see more Asian lady beetles than other parts of a house.

This is why Asian lady beetles can gather in huge numbers on one part of a house while you have almost none on the other side. Once they’re on the wall, they can then search for shelter that allows them to get further into the structure. Little gaps around places like windows, doors, siding, soffits, vents, and rooflines can provide access to protected voids where they can wait out the winter.

Some beetles remain hidden until the winter warmth wakes them up again. This is why indoor sightings may occur long after the big outdoor gathering has ended. If one wall consistently attracts beetles, use that pattern as a reason to start checking nearby exterior seams, screens, windows, vents, and utility penetrations. When you find gaps, seal them. If you find broken screens or vents, repair those while still being sure to allow for proper ventilation.

The best time to do this is in the fall before they have a chance to overwinter. Reducing entry is more useful than trying to make the wall stop receiving sunlight.
