  • Can mice slip into the garage first and then get into the house?

F.A.Q.

Can mice slip into the garage first and then get into the house?

Yes. A garage can serve as an intermediate step between the outdoors and the living portion of the home.

Garage doors are great ways for rodents to get inside. The trouble with them is that the seals seldom sit flush against the ground, or for that matter, the walls. Worn bottom seals, damaged side weatherstripping, uneven thresholds, and gaps at the corners are the rule and not the exception. Mice can use any of those to get inside.

Mice don’t want to be out in the cold. So if they find an opportunity to get in your home, there is a good chance they’ll take it. This is why it’s also wise to make your home less hospitable to them. If you have bird seed, pet food, grass seed, cardboard, or fabric, seal it all in metal or heavy plastic containers. That way, they can’t use it to eat or shred and build nests.

In the fall, the best thing you can do to help prevent rodents is check openings into the house around doors, windows, wall penetrations (cables, pipes, etc.), and cracks in the foundation that are larger than a dime. If you find gaps, seal them with chew-resistant materials so the rodents have a tougher time getting in. If you find missing or torn screens or vents, replace those while still making sure the home is properly ventilated.

Keep an eye out for signs of rodents like droppings, gnaw marks, and musty odors. If you spot any of these or you hear scratching in the walls, it’s a good idea to contact a professional. Rodents are very hard to clear on your own, and a professional can help you do that and then seal up entry points.
