F.A.Q.

Can mice enter basements through small gaps?

Mice can get through gaps as small as ¼ inch wide. These are common in basements.

Basements are surrounded by exactly the kinds of structural transition points where small openings tend to develop. That’s why pests, especially rodents, tend to show up in basements.

Utility lines pass through foundations. Basement windows have frames and screens. Exterior doors meet thresholds. Vents, pipes, cables, siding, masonry, and additions all create seams that can deteriorate over time. This is not great news for basements.

Mice don’t need large holes to get inside. That is what makes their basement entry points easy to overlook. Of course, access is only part of the issue. Attractants are another. Basements are good places for shelter because temperatures are relatively stable. Stored food, bird seed, pet food, cardboard, fabric, clutter, or other materials may provide additional resources or nesting material. From the basement, mice may also be able to move into wall voids or other parts of the home.

If you’re worried about rodents in your basement, start by looking outside around the foundation. Look at the places where utilities enter the building and anywhere different exterior materials meet. If you see cracks in the foundation, check those out too. Sometimes they can get big enough to let rodents inside. Then move indoors to evaluate the interior side of those exact same locations, searching specifically for physical evidence like fresh gnaw marks or consistent travel paths along the lower walls.

If you find openings that rodents are using to get inside, you can often seal them with durable materials designed for rodent exclusion. Damaged screens and door sweeps should be repaired as well, while required ventilation should remain unobstructed. And if you find evidence of mice, do not assume the nearest visible gap is automatically the only one. Rodents can use more than one way to get inside a home.
