Autumn is here. Summer days are now behind us, and there is a bit of chill in the air. While this season can feel somewhat melancholy after summer’s consistent warmth, fall is a great time to spend time in the outdoors when the air isn’t too cold and is refreshingly mellow. From hiking in the mountains to taking a picnic to the park, there are many activities that remain to be enjoyed this time of year. While we would normally encourage you to enjoy the outdoors with abandon, this season deserves a measure of caution.
Despite the cooler weather, there are dangers that lurk in the autumn foliage in October. Although we typically associate them with summer, ticks remain a serious issue in our region in the fall due to their large populations and our decreased caution when entering the outdoors. So, it is important that you take precautions against these creatures during the fall. Why is defending against ticks important? As you probably know already, ticks are a huge problem in the Northeast due to their ability to transmit dangerous diseases to humans. Lyme disease, in particular, is a serious concern as the disease is suspected to infect somewhere between 300,000 to 400,000 people every year in the United States.

There are a few things you can do to defend against ticks. Firstly, when spending time outdoors, make sure to wear long sleeves, pants, and closed toed shoes to ensure ticks don’t have easy access to your skin. Secondly, try to steer clear of tall weeds, grass, and dense woodland. These areas tend to be where you’re most likely to encounter ticks. Thirdly, always conduct ticks checks when you return from the outdoors. Ticks range in size from the size of a miniscule poppy seed to the size of an apple seed.
