Just Add Water: Mosquitoes Are Multiplying Machines

We’ve previously discussed how from one single mosquito offspring, more than a billion mosquitoes can be produced over the course of 4 weeks. Considering the size of a typical yard, that is one huge concentration of pests. Given the diseases, they can carry and the discomfort they cause when trying to enjoy the outdoors, every homeowner wants to see the least amount of them possible. We have many solutions to this problem, but there is one major step that a homeowner can take to make pest control easier without our help.

Mosquito Control? More Like Mosquito Prevention

When it comes to a Texas-sized mosquito infestation, our mosquito control measures are the best and most versatile you’ll find. However, to limit the spread of new mosquitoes, you may want to take a look at one of the 7 T’s of mosquito prevention: eliminating standing water.

Mosquitos depend on standing water to lay their eggs and for their eggs hatch. Any container storing water becomes a prime environment for eggs, providing necessary walls upon which eggs can adhere and the water necessary for their development and hatching all in one place.

So how can we stop the mosquito reproduction process before it starts?

For starters, eliminating any containers that collect standing water. This solution is the most effective, of course, but sometimes that isn’t always possible.

If these containers must remain outside, a key factor in mosquito control is making sure to empty and scrub them regularly. Even without water, mosquito eggs can remain adhered to the walls of a container and can survive for nearly eight months without any water source. Several hundred eggs may only be around ¼ of an inch in size, making it important to thoroughly scrub the entire container, regardless of whether you can see any signs of mosquito development. Plan to do this at least once a week for the best results.

Another option for outdoor water containers is to ensure that they are tightly covered. Mosquitos can find their way into all sorts of tiny spaces, so ensuring a securely fixed covering is crucial if this is the option that works best for you.

Even taking all of these precautions, there is likely some unavoidable standing water that can’t constantly be maintained to prevent mosquitos. Mosquito Squad of South Central Texas currently offers a barrier treatment eliminating 85-90% of mosquitoes on your property. This formula is time-released so that you can enjoy mosquito control for up to three weeks with no hassle.
