F.A.Q.

How long do professional mosquito treatments last?

A professional barrier treatment is effective for two to three weeks per application. That’s why treatments are scheduled on a recurring basis throughout the season. Mosquitoes should never have a chance to regroup and reproduce.

You might wonder if professional mosquito treatment is worth the cost. One thing that might be a sticking point is that treatment takes place every three weeks. That might seem like a lot, but it’s worth knowing why frequent re-treatment is beneficial.

Barrier treatments use EPA-registered products applied to the vegetation, shaded zones, and resting areas where mosquitoes spend most of their time. The product bonds to leaf surfaces and remains active as mosquitoes land on treated areas throughout the day and evening. The product is pretty good about standing up to the elements, but two or three weeks of sunlight, rain, and natural degradation is still a lot. And this gradually reduces the product’s effectiveness.

Meanwhile, mosquitoes breed on a roughly seven-to-ten day cycle when the weather is warm. New adults are constantly entering the environment if left to their own devices. A treatment that lasts two to three weeks covers at least one full breeding cycle and overlaps with the beginning of the next, so mosquitoes don’t have a chance to recover between treatments.

In Northern Westchester, where properties tend to be well-vegetated with significant tree canopy and shade, the standard two-to-three-week interval works well for most homeowners. The typical season runs from about April to October. As long as treatments are reapplied every three weeks, you can expect an up to 90% reduction in mosquito activity all season long.
