F.A.Q.

How long does a mosquito treatment last?

Professional barrier treatments usually last 2–3 weeks. After that, they are reapplied so mosquitoes don’t have a chance to rebuild the population.

You may wonder why professional mosquito treatment isn’t just a one-and-done operation. It has to be regularly reapplied, with every 2–3 weeks being the sweet spot. The reason for this has to do partly with the way treatments themselves work, and partly with mosquito biology.

The product is applied to vegetation, shaded areas, and resting zones where mosquitoes spend the majority of their time. It bonds to leaf surfaces and remains active as mosquitoes land on treated areas throughout the day and evening. Over the course of two to three weeks, sun exposure and rain will degrade the product, reducing its potency.

The next application is timed to refresh the barrier before it fades, meaning pests never get a chance to rebuild. Mosquito breeding cycles are short, often only taking about a week. Even short lapses in treatment give mosquitoes a chance to rebuild.

In North Orange County, the length of time between treatments can be influenced by conditions specific to Southern California properties. Irrigation schedules and sprinkler systems that regularly wet vegetation may wash product off treated surfaces faster than rainfall alone would in other climates. Properties with south-facing exposures and heavy sun get more UV degradation. A good technician accounts for these factors when setting the schedule for your property.

The warm, dry climate in Orange County also means mosquito season can extend longer than in colder regions. The Aedes mosquitoes that have been expanding across Southern California are aggressive daytime biters and can breed in tiny amounts of water year-round. This makes it all the more important to keep up consistent, scheduled treatment.
