F.A.Q.

What smells keep mosquitoes away?

Scents like citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint can deter mosquitoes at close range, but none of them provide reliable, lasting protection on their own.

If you're searching for a simple, pleasant-smelling way to keep mosquitoes off you this summer, then it’s probably an understatement to say you’re tired of getting bitten. That's a miserable way to spend an evening outside.

There is real science behind scent-based repellents. Mosquitoes navigate heavily by smell, using CO2 and body odor to find hosts. This is why certain plant-based compounds interfere with that process. Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is the strongest of the bunch and is the only plant-derived ingredient the CDC recognizes as an effective repellent. Citronella, lavender, peppermint, and rosemary have also shown some repellent properties in lab settings.

But there’s a catch, as there often is with mosquitoes. These scents fade quickly. Citronella candles only create small zones of mild deterrence. It dissipates within a few feet. Essential oil sprays applied to skin tend to last 30 minutes to 2 hours at best. That’s a lot less time than DEET- or picaridin-based products. And if mosquitoes are hungry enough, they can push through a scent they hate if the CO2 signal is compelling.

Planting mosquito-deterring herbs in your garden like basil, rosemary, mint, and lemongrass won’t hurt, and they’re useful for the kitchen. But the oils need to be released from the leaves to have much of an effect. And at that point, you’d be rubbing basil on your skin every few minutes. Better to use it in a soup or stir-fry!

Scent-based approaches are a supplement, but they’re not a solution. They can make a small difference in the moment, but it’s best to pair them with other strategies like wearing long sleeves, staying indoors at dusk and dawn, and using DEET- or picaridin-based products.

That said, if you’re a homeowner by the New Hampshire lakes, you probably want to spend time outdoors without having to worry about sprays or candles every night. And if that’s the case, Mosquito Squad of New Hampshire Lakes offers barrier treatments that target mosquito resting and breeding areas across your property. Rather than masking your scent, the treatment reduces the mosquito population itself. And that’s a more reliable path to comfortable evenings outside.
