F.A.Q.

Do mice come out during the day?

Mice are nocturnal, so if you see them during the day, you likely have a major rodent infestation.

Mice generally avoid activity during the daylight hours. If you see a mouse during the daytime, it is likely that you have a large infestation on your hands. The population may have outgrown its available hiding spaces and now the mice are competing for resources.

It’s frightening to see a mouse at any time of day. Nobody wants to share their home with mice, especially if you have kids. So you might be surprised to find that mice feel the same way—they are active at night because they evolved to move when owls, hawks, and snakes are asleep.

Mice have poor eyesight and rely on whiskers and scent to find their way. Low-light conditions are not a problem for them. So they stick to this pattern and forage when the house is quiet and hide when people are active.

So given that context, it’s easier to understand why daytime activity isn’t normal behavior. Because once you see a mouse during the day, it’s reasonable to assume something forced it out. Population pressure can do this because mice can reproduce rapidly—5 to 10 litters per year with 5 to 6 pups each. If the colony has grown beyond what the wall voids, attic, or basement can comfortably support, mice start competing for food and space. Some get pushed out of prime hiding spots and have no choice but to forage in the middle of the afternoon.

Daytime sightings, in short, mean the problem is far beyond one or two mice. By the time you see one during the day, there are likely dozens more you can’t see. That’s an established infestation, not a couple of strays that wandered in recently.

If you’re noticing daytime mouse activity, it’s a good idea to reach out to a professional rodent control company.
