Do Chiggers Go Away at the End of Summer?

Wouldn’t it be nice if all our yard pests simply packed it in as summer winds down?

Summer in Middle Tennessee means long days outdoors, backyard get-togethers, and plenty of opportunities to spend time enjoying nature. As you probably already know, it unfortunately also means contending with pests like mosquitoes, ticks, and a perhaps a less-talked-about nuisance - chiggers. If you’ve ever dealt with their itchy bites, you may be wondering: do chiggers go away once summer ends?

What Exactly Are Chiggers?

Chiggers are often referred to as mites or clover mites. The fact is, chiggers are not adult mites, but rather the larval stage of a type of mite. Nearly invisible to the naked eye, these tiny terrors earn their title with the extreme irritation caused when they attach themselves to our skin. Unlike blood-sucking pests, like mosquitoes and ticks, chiggers do not feed on blood. The irritation brought on by their “bites” is delivered through an enzyme injected into our skin that breaks down skin cells. We’re talking intensely itchy lesions!

In Middle Tennessee, chiggers thrive in grassy, brushy, and even damp areas around our yards, which makes late summer outdoor activities prime time for run-ins with these pests.

Will Chiggers Go Away After Summer?

In short – no, chiggers do not simply go away. However, they do have seasons of activity in the Nashville area.

  • Peak chigger activity occurs from late springtime through the end of summer.
  • Chigger activity declines in the fall, as temperatures cool, especially below 60°
  • In winter, chiggers are of little – if any – concern. Hard freezes can kill chiggers, but if they have found a spot to overwinter, they will not die.
  • Chiggers will return in the springtime, though!

The good news is that your itchy chigger encounters will naturally decline with the end of summer, as they settle in for winter. When winter ends, they will emerge from their inactive state, eager to find their next bite target.

Ways to Protect Yourself from Chiggers

Beautiful weather at the end of summer and beginning of autumn will bring nature seekers outdoors, and chiggers will still be around – even if they are slowed by the changing season. Here are a few ways to protect yourself and your family from them:

  • Keep grass mowed, brush trimmed, and property dispose of clippings
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when hiking or camping
  • Use insect repellent with DEET, or wear permethrin treated clothing
  • Shower promptly after returning indoors
