Yes. Rodents can gnaw electrical wiring and damage or shred insulation when they use an attic as shelter.
An attic is a great place for mice and other rodents to go in the winter. They often seek out shelter indoors for protection from weather, particularly because the temperatures are more stable inside. But while inside, they often find they have quiet nesting areas and access to materials like insulation that can be shredded to make nests.
Rodents also gnaw a lot. Their teeth never stop growing so they chew partly as a way of filing them down. That means wiring, wood, stored materials, packaging, and other objects may show damage when rodents are active in the space. Insulation is a particular favorite of rodents because they can easily pull it apart for nesting material.
Signs that you have a rodent problem include the presence of droppings and gnaw marks. You might also see shredded nesting material around or find tracks through insulation. Repeated scratching noises overhead or in the walls can also be a warning sign. A musty smell can also be a warning sign.
Entry points are just as important as the damage itself. Look around roof and eave junctions, attic vents, utility penetrations, siding transitions, and other places where gaps may connect the exterior with protected spaces. Any exclusion work should preserve necessary ventilation.
If you happen to find damaged wiring, it’s not just a pest control issue at that point. You’ll need to hire an electrician to evaluate and properly repair the damage. As for the infestation itself, the active rodent problem should be addressed along with sealing appropriate entry points. The work should be planned so rodents aren’t needlessly trapped inside.
