F.A.Q.

Are DIY solutions enough to keep mosquitoes out of my yard?

DIY mosquito control can help, but it’s usually not enough to keep a yard clear, especially in eastern Connecticut where there are a lot of woods and wetlands. Dumping water and trimming back cover reduce what breeds on your property, yet they don't touch the resting adults or the mosquitoes arriving from next door.

You might be hesitant to go full-tilt into professional mosquito treatment at the first sign of a problem. This is why most people try the DIY route first, and the basics help. So it’s worth talking first about the effective actions you can take on your own and where the ceiling is.

Emptying standing water and cleaning gutters helps reduce the amount of standing water on your property, which reduces the number of places where mosquitoes can breed. Keeping the grass cut and thinning out damp and shrubby cover also helps cut down on mosquitoes breeding and resting on your own land. If you do these consistently, you will have noticeably fewer.

But there are limits. Store-bought sprays and foggers knock down the bugs that they immediately hit, but they leave no residual barrier. Citronella candles and clip-on repellents only help the people standing right next to them. Bug zappers mostly take out harmless insects. None of these is effective at controlling mosquitoes on a population level.

Barrier treatments work because they stay in the places where mosquitoes rest. When mosquitoes land on treated spaces, they are knocked down. This knocks down a lot of adult mosquitoes and helps keep them from breeding more. A bottle from the hardware store can’t do that.

If you're tired of doing what you can on your own and still getting eaten alive, Mosquito Squad of Middlesex, New London & Windham County can help. This can be done by applying the lasting barrier that DIY can't, helping protect your yard with up to 90% reduction in mosquito activity on a recurring 21-day cycle.
