F.A.Q.

Why do I see more mosquitoes around my pool?

A properly maintained pool doesn't breed mosquitoes because the chlorine and filtration prevent it. But the area around a pool is a good place for mosquitoes to rest and breed nearby.

You've invested in a pool to enjoy your backyard, and now the mosquitoes are ruining it. It’s annoying and you want them to stop. Worse still, it seems like they're worse around the pool than anywhere else. And while the problem is certainly not your imagination, you may be relieved to know that it's not the pool water that's causing the problem.

Chlorinated, filtered pool water is hostile to mosquito larvae. They can't develop in it. The pool itself isn't the breeding source unless it is stagnant and untreated. Everything around the pool is a different story.

Pool covers are a major culprit when it comes to mosquito problems. Even a tight-fitting cover collects rainwater in low spots, and that standing water is a great breeding site. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to lay eggs, so a few sagging pockets on a pool cover can produce dozens of mosquitoes in under two weeks.

Landscaping around pools tends to be dense and well-watered. Ornamental plantings, hedgerows for privacy, shaded seating areas—these all create sheltered, humid conditions for mosquitoes to rest during the hottest, driest parts of the day. When you’re at the pool in the evening, they can simply come out of hiding and bite you.

Filter baskets, drip trays, skimmer wells, decorative water features, and poorly drained deck areas can all hold enough water to support breeding. The common problem with all is standing water. If you can remove the standing water or otherwise refresh the water so it doesn’t stagnate, it can stop them from becoming breeding sites.
