F.A.Q.

Do rodents nest near home foundations in the fall?

They can. Foundations can provide rodents with sheltered areas, nearby entry points, and protection from worsening fall weather.

As temperatures fall in Greenwich, mice and other rodents start going inside. They’re looking for shelter. That doesn’t mean they’re immediately going to move into a house. Some might instead use areas close to the structure where there is landscaping, stored materials, porches, decks, crawl spaces, or foundational features that provide cover. But all it takes is one more cold snap to convince them to venture a little closer to home.

The foundation gives rodents plenty of ways in. There are small gaps around utility lines and cables. There are vents and the spaces around those vents that tend to fall into disrepair. Doors, windows, and siding transitions can all let them in. And sometimes even the foundation itself develops cracks large enough to let them inside. Mice can squeeze into openings roughly 1/4 inch wide, so it doesn’t take much. Once inside, mice can comfortably stay in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and wall voids for a long time.

Conditions around the foundation matter too. Dense vegetation, leaf buildup, stacked materials, clutter, or debris can make it harder to spot rodent activity while providing protected spaces close to the structure. Likewise, if there is a lot of bird seed, pet food, or trash nearby, rodents can eat well and that only gives them more reasons to be around.

Fall is a good time to check out these areas before colder weather settles in. Check for obvious gaps around your foundation and seal them with chew-resistant materials. Exterior door corners and garage seals also deserve a little extra attention. It’s also a good idea to reduce unnecessary clutter and debris next to the house so rodents have less shelter, and keep food and seed stored securely.

Indoors, droppings, gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, damaged packages, or repeated scratching noises may indicate that rodents have already moved beyond the exterior. If you notice any of these, it’s time to call a professional. These signs may indicate an active rodent problem.
