How to Prep Your Home for Pest Season in Greenwich

If you want to make a property beautiful, a large wooded lot, mature landscaping, and stone walls are a great place to start. It definitely doesn’t hurt to be close to the Long Island Sound. That’s why so many homes in Greenwich are as lovely as they are.
But pests like a lot of the same things people do. Which means mosquitoes, ticks, and rodents find plenty of reasons to enjoy Greenwich too. Once the weather starts warming up, all these pests and more all become more active at the same time. The pest pressure can be immense when the season is in full swing.
But there are a few things you can do in the spring that will help a lot. Here's what Greenwich homeowners should focus on before things ramp up.
Deal with Tick Habitats First
Fairfield County has some of the highest Lyme disease rates in the country, and Greenwich's deer population drives heavy tick presence across the area. Ticks are a problem earlier in the year than you might think, too, becoming active as soon as temperatures regularly exceed 35. That means they’re moving well before most people are thinking about doing yard work.
It’s a good idea to clear leaf litter from wooded edges and under shrubs. Leaf litter is the single most common tick habitat on residential properties. This can be a big task on a large property with a lot of woods, but it remains one of the most impactful things you can do.
If you do this and ticks are still coming in from the woods, here’s a tip that can help. Put down a three-foot gravel or wood chip barrier between your lawn and wooded edges. This works well because ticks don’t want to cross dry, exposed surfaces. So this will help stop them from migrating into your yard.
And, of course, mowing grass always helps. It gives ticks far fewer places to hide.
Clean Gutters and Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and spring rain plus snowmelt creates plenty of it. Walk your property and dump, drain, or flip anything that holds water. Plant saucers, birdbaths, kids' toys, wheelbarrows, decorative features—they can all be home to the next generation of mosquitoes if left in place.
On larger Greenwich estates, check areas you don't visit often: back corners of the property, around outbuildings, and near garden structures.
It’s also a good idea to clean gutters. Clogged gutters can hold water for weeks, which makes them shockingly effective mosquito hatcheries, and a source of a lot of headaches (and bug bites).
Seal Entry Points for Rodents
Mice and rats that overwintered in your home don't leave when spring arrives. They start breeding. A single female mouse can produce five to ten litters per year, and spring is when that cycle accelerates.
Check attics, basements, and garages for signs: droppings, gnaw marks, and nesting material. Seal gaps around foundations, utility penetrations, and where pipes enter the building. A mouse can fit through a gap the width of a dime.
Older Greenwich homes and estate properties often have more entry points than newer construction. Decades of settling, additions, and modifications create gaps that rodents can exploit more easily than a new home a mile away.
Watch for Spotted Lanternflies and Wasps
Spotted lanternflies are an invasive species that’s been causing a lot of trouble in Connecticut. You can reduce their numbers by checking smooth surfaces on your property for egg masses. They look a lot like dried mud patches and are often found on tree trunks, fence posts, and outdoor furniture. Scrape them into rubbing alcohol to destroy them before they hatch.
Wasps and hornet queens also tend to wake up this time of year too. As soon as they’re done overwintering, they start building colonies. Check eaves, soffits, hollow trees, and sheltered spots around outbuildings for early-stage nests. It’s far easier to knock down a small hornet's nest today than a basketball-sized one in July.
Need Help with Greenwich Pest Control?
On a typical suburban lot, you can walk the entire property in a few minutes and identify most pest risk areas. On larger Greenwich estates with extensive wooded borders, stone walls, water features, and outbuildings, that's not realistic. There are simply a lot of places that pests can call home.
It’s here thatMosquito Squad of Greenwich can help. A technician can come by, walk your property, and figure out where pests are most likely to be a problem. Then they can provide treatment right where it counts. Scheduling that first treatment before Memorial Day means you're already doing a lot to curtail pest populations that would otherwise take off unchecked.
