What Is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-Gal Syndrome is a delayed allergic reaction triggered by a sugar molecule called alpha-gal, which is introduced into the body as a result of a tick bite, specifically, a bite from the lone star tick. This sugar is found in most mammalian meat, including beef, pork, and lamb.

Once the molecule is introduced into their bodies, people with AGS can experience a range of allergic reactions several hours after eating red meat. These may include rash, nausea, stomach cramps, or even anaphylaxis in severe cases.

One of the biggest challenges with AGS is that its symptoms can appear long after exposure, and as such, it is a tricky condition to diagnose. Some researchers even believe cases may be underreported due to misdiagnosis or lack of familiarity with the condition among healthcare providers. Though there does not yet exist a cure, it can be managed through dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments. The condition can impact quality of life and will require lifelong vigilance.

What species of tick carries Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

The primary vector for AGS is the lone star tick, a species recognizable by the white dot on the back of adult females. The species is known for its aggressive behavior and rapid movement. It is currently most prevalent in the southeastern United States, but it has begun to expand its range.

Although the species is not currently established in Colorado, lone star ticks have been occasionally found in the state, often carried in by migrating birds or traveling animals. There is also some emerging evidence that there are other species of ticks that may spread Alpha-Gal Syndrome, but research is still minimal.
