F.A.Q.

Do I need to stay indoors at dusk to avoid bugs?

You shouldn't have to. Dusk is peak feeding time for many mosquitoes, so heading inside does cut down on bites, but it also means surrendering the best part of a summer evening.

You can stay indoors to hide from the mosquitoes. But you shouldn’t have to.

Better than hiding inside: treating the source of the problem. Mosquitoes tend to come out around dawn and dusk. They tend to be most active in the cooler, more humid stretch around sunrise and sunset. Midday sun and dry air dehydrate them, so they rest in the shade through the heat and come out to feed as the sun drops. Sundown lines up perfectly with when you’d like to be outside.

But there’s a catch: there are some mosquitoes that can bite any time of the day. The Asian tiger mosquito, which has been reported in Michigan, can and will bite you any time it pleases. That includes the middle of the day, often on your ankles.

The bigger problem with staying inside is that it doesn’t change your problem. The mosquitoes are still out there. They’re living, breeding, and resting, and they’ll be right there waiting for the next night.

There are two ways to fix this. The first is to dump standing water around the property so they won’t breed on your land. The other is to treat the foliage where they rest so the population will drop—this is the idea behind professional treatment.
