F.A.Q.

Do homes near woods see more mice infestations during the fall?

They can, but proximity to woods is only one part of the risk. Access to the house, food, and protected shelter matter just as much.

Wooded areas provide rodents with natural cover, nesting sites, seeds, and insects. That makes the woods very attractive places to live throughout the year. As temperatures drop, some rodents may start looking for warmer, more protected shelter. If your house happens to be nearby, that can mean more rodent activity around or inside your home by winter.

Activity tends to be worse around garages, sheds, basements, crawl spaces, and foundations. That isn’t to say that living next to the woods automatically means rodent problems. They need openings like gaps around garage or exterior doors, utility lines, vents, siding, or even cracks in the foundation.

Once they get inside, another big factor is how available food and nesting materials are. If you have bird seed, pet food, loose items in your pantry, or open trash, that could feed rodents. Likewise, if you have a lot of general clutter, especially fabric or cardboard, mice can shred that to make nests.

Mice don’t always immediately push indoors. Sometimes, they just push closer to the house because there is dense vegetation, leaf buildup, stacked firewood, or brush nearby. If any of this happens to be the case, you can often reduce your rodent issues simply by clearing some of this up before temperatures get really cold. That takes away their intermediate shelter.

Even if you do all this, it’s still good to watch out for signs of a rodent infestation such as droppings or gnaw marks. Shredded material and mysterious holes in items in your pantry can give you a hint, as can the sound of scratching in the walls or a musty odor. If you think you have an infestation, it’s a good idea to call a professional who can help clear that out and seal up entry points.
