F.A.Q.

Can 1 mouse mean an infestation?

Yes, seeing even one mouse means there are probably more.

Seeing a mouse run across your floor is deeply unsettling. And the worry that comes along with it is justified. Mice are social, nocturnal, and cautious. They’ve evolved to avoid being detected because being seen in the wild usually means being eaten.

Mice like to stick to edges and walls. They’ll generally avoid open spaces. So if one has gotten bold enough to show itself, it’s often because the population has grown to the point where competition for food and space is pushing individuals into the open. Even a single mouse exploring your home during broad daylight is a warning sign.

Mice can also reproduce with shocking speed. This can easily turn a small problem into a severe one. Even a single female can have five to ten litters per year, with six to eight pups per litter. And worse still, it only takes six weeks for those pups to reach breeding age. It’s not hard for a pair of mice in October to turn into dozens of mice in January. It doesn’t help that mice love breeding indoors because they’re safe from predators and bad weather.

There are other ways to see if you have an infestation too, as mice leave evidence of their presence long before they run around in plain sight. Common signs include droppings (about the size of rice grains) in cabinets or along baseboards, greasy rub marks where they travel along walls, and scratching sounds in the walls or ceiling at night. Any of these signs could point toward a larger infestation.

Mice are a health concern, so you don’t want them to be in your home for long. They contaminate surfaces with urine and droppings as they travel. They can spread hantavirus, salmonella, and other pathogens. The longer infestations go on, the greater the risk of contamination throughout your home.

The good news is that catching the problem early makes a real difference. Mice tend to stick to the same pathways. Once those paths are found, it’s easier for professionals to take control of the situation.
