How Yard Layout and Landscaping Impact Tick Exposure Risk

You might think that the number of ticks that live on your property is purely random and a force of nature. And while there is a good deal of randomness to it, you also have a lot of power to keep ticks away. Much of this comes down to landscaping choices and the layout of your yard.

When you know how yard layout and landscaping influences tick risks, it can help you make smarter choices. And it can also help you know where to focus tick control efforts for the best results.

Here’s what you need to know.

Ticks Live in the Borders Between the Woods & Your Lawn

If there's one thing to remember from this article, it's this: more than 80% of ticks found in residential yards are in the transition zone between maintained lawn and wooded or natural areas.

Ticks prefer living in humid, shaded environments with a lot of vegetation. While there, they point their legs out and wait for warm-blooded creatures to pass by. This is called “questing,” and if you happen to walk by (or your kid or pet), they’ll latch on to you.

A lot of the charm of Williamsburg is in the woods, and you can still enjoy that. It helps to put down a three-foot-wide barrier of wood chips, gravel, or dry mulch between your lawn and wooded edges. This will dramatically reduce tick migration into the yard. The rare tick can still make it across, but they’ll generally avoid crossing dry, exposed surfaces.

Ticks Love the Shade

Ticks can't survive prolonged direct sunlight. This is why sunny, well-mowed lawn areas are far lower risk than shaded, humid areas. This is one of the most impactful design factors you can control.

If your patio, play area, or outdoor living space is in a sunny, open section of the yard, tick encounters there will be rare. If those same features are tucked against a wooded edge under heavy tree canopy, you’re likely to deal with a lot more ticks.

When possible, position your high-use areas like swing sets, seating areas, and play equipment in sunnier parts of the yard. You don’t need to clear-cut your property. It just helps to be thoughtful about where your family spends the most time versus where tick risk is highest.

Landscaping Can Attract Ticks (If You’re Not Careful)

Tall ornamental grasses planted near patios and walkways give ticks questing positions right next to where people walk. Dense ground covers in high-traffic areas do the same thing. These plants look great but put ticks within arm's reach of your family. The same is true of any dense shrub plantings.

Stone walls, retaining walls, and rock gardens sound like they wouldn’t create tick problems. But contrary to what you might expect, they tend to create moist microclimates that ticks love. The gaps between the stones also help provide shelter. If these features are near seating areas or pathways, they’re worth keeping an eye on.

However, your landscaping habits can also work in your favor. Raking and removing leaves, particularly from yard edges and under shrubs, eliminates one of the most common tick-friendly conditions. Likewise, you can put wood chips under swing sets and keep them fresh to deter ticks as well.

Deer-resistant plants or deer fencing around your property can also help more than you’d think. Deer are, in fact, the primary host for ticks so fewer deer means fewer ticks in your yard. This won’t eliminate ticks from other hosts like mice and chipmunks, but it’s a fairly easy way to cut down on the presence of ticks.

Tired of Seeing Ticks in Your Williamsburg Yard?

When in doubt, follow the 6 C's of tick control:

  1. Clear debris
  2. Clean up leaf litter
  3. Choose tick-resistant plants
  4. Check for ticks regularly
  5. Call a professional for treatment
  6. Care for your pets with veterinary tick prevention

But if you try most of this and you’re still dealing with ticks, it might be time to call in a pro. When you do this, a technician can come by your property and identify the specific spots on your property where ticks are most concentrated so treatment is targeted where it matters most.
