Rain creates new standing water where mosquitoes breed. It also increases the humidity so they can stay active longer.
If every rainy stretch in the Sandhills seems to bring a wave of mosquitoes along with it, then you should know the pattern is real. It’s extra frustrating when you’ve already done everything you can think of to keep your yard clean.
Female mosquitoes lay eggs in or near standing water. A single rain event can fill dozens of small containers and depressions across a typical property. Suddenly, mosquitoes can start the next generation in a wheelbarrow left upright, plant saucers, low spots in the yard, or the corrugated end of a downspout extension. Some species will lay their eggs in dry areas that flood periodically, meaning dormant eggs already sitting in a depression can hatch within hours of being covered by rainwater.
It doesn’t take a lot of time for mosquitoes to reproduce, either. In warm weather, larvae can go from egg to flying adult in seven to ten days. Rain on April Fools’ Day could mean swarms of mosquitoes by the time your taxes are due.
Humidity also plays a huge role here. Mosquitoes dehydrate easily in dry air. Hot, breezy, sunny days keep them in check. But after rain, the air holds more moisture, vegetation stays wet, and shaded areas stay damp. You might have more overcast or mostly cloudy days, further reducing sun exposure. And that all means mosquitoes can bite you during more hours of the day.
