F.A.Q.

Do mosquitoes and ticks stay active into the fall on warm days?

Yes. Warm fall weather can allow both mosquitoes and ticks to remain active well after summer begins winding down.

Fall doesn’t automatically stop all the pests outside. Different pests are problems at different times, and this is worth knowing if you don’t want to deal with them all winter long.

You’ll likely see less mosquito activity as the temperatures cool, but a stretch of warm weather can wake up the adults again. That’s why, even in October and November, it’s important to clear standing water left in containers, gutters, planters, toys, and tarps outside. This can help reduce mosquito breeding while conditions are already working in your favor.

Ticks are a little different. Some ticks remain active during surprisingly cool weather and can become noticeable during mild fall days. Leaf litter, brush, low vegetation, and wooded edges can provide protected, humid conditions close to the ground even when the air feels chilly. Ticks, in other words, have no compunction about biting you just because the calendar says November.

If you want to reduce the presence of ticks in your yard, keep mowing the lawn and clear away excessive leaf buildup from places where people or pets spend time. Fall yardwork really helps here, and that includes clearing brush and trimming vegetation as well. If you plan on being outside for a long time, especially around dawn or dusk, consider using repellents with DEET or picaridin in them. Cold often only temporarily suppresses pests, and warmer weather can make them noticeable again.
