F.A.Q.

Are mosquitoes worse at certain times of day?

Yes, most mosquito species are most active during dusk and dawn.

If your evenings outside keep ending early because of mosquitoes, but your afternoons feel OK, then the timing isn’t random. Mosquitoes really do peak at certain times of day, namely dawn and dusk.

Mosquitoes are crepuscular, meaning they're wired to be most active during low-light transition periods. This is nature’s way of protecting the mosquito from harm, because sun, high temperatures, UV radiation, and high winds are all harmful to mosquitoes. As the sun drops, all of these dangerous conditions for mosquitoes are reduced. That means mosquitoes can leave their daytime resting spots and start seeking new hosts. Dawn is the other peak, but most people don’t notice it because they go outside later in the evening.

There are exceptions. The Asian tiger mosquito is an aggressive daytime biter that's well-established across North Carolina. If you're getting bitten in the middle of the afternoon in a shaded part of your yard, that's likely the species responsible. You can tell them apart from other species because they have distinct black-and-white striped markings.

Knowing when mosquitoes are at their worst makes it easier to plan around them. You can start outdoor gatherings earlier, use fans on the patio, and wear long sleeves as the sun sets. But if your routine regularly includes time spent outside around dusk, as it does for many people, your best bet in the long term is to deal with mosquitoes on a population level.

Mosquito Squad of the Sandhills can help here by applying barrier treatments to places where mosquitoes hide during the day. A technician will walk your yard to figure out exactly where these spots are. By targeting those zones, the treatment reduces the number of mosquitoes available to emerge at dusk. This makes evenings outside dramatically more comfortable, because the mosquito population can be reduced by as much as 90%.
