Fleas and flies are common outdoor pests, but do we know the harm they have the potential to inflict?
At Mosquito Squad of Southeastern Mass, we do understand the perils of fly and flea infestations. We know that these are not simply two pesky outdoor pests. And because many local home and business owners might not know the true negative aspects of these two vectors, we believe it’s worth taking a closer look at both!
Get the Buzz on Flies
We all know flies as the usual suspects for backyard barbecue crashes. They buzz around our faces, our food, and make themselves massive annoyances. Houseflies, fruit flies, and blowflies are all potential disease vectors. They can transmit nasty diseases to humans and animals.
Most of the time, it’s not through their bites that these maladies are unleased, but from their bodies. As flies are often found on rotting food, pet and animal waste, and other decaying matter, they can carry the likes of E. coli and salmonella into our happy yards and homes. When a fly lands on your potato salad or your child’s juice cup, those same germs come along for the ride.
A few fly species, like deer flies and horse flies, do bite – and very painfully so! These two fly species can additionally spread pathogens through their bites, like tularemia and anaplasmosis.
What’s the Lowdown on Fleas?
You might associate fleas only with pets, but these little bloodsuckers won’t stop at pets and wild animals. If they find a ride indoors, either on your pet or perhaps human family members, fleas can infest your home. And yep – fleas are for sure disease vectors too!
Historically, fleas played a huge role in the transmission and spread of bubonic plague. While that’s somewhat more of a concern of the past, today’s fleas can transmit tapeworms, cat scratch disease, and murine typhus. Their itchy bites can also trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals and animals.
FLEA NOT-SO-FUN FACT: The U.S. has an average of seven confirmed cases of bubonic plague annually.
Fleas and Flies, One Huge Problem
Both fleas and flies reproduce quickly, thrive in warm, humid environments, and are notoriously difficult to eliminate once. Their presence isn’t just unpleasant—it can signal a growing risk to your family’s health. Mosquito Squad of Southeastern Massachusetts urges home and business owners to get ahead of any potential fly and/or flea infestations. If you see on flea, it’s time to act!
