F.A.Q.

How do pests get inside if my home is sealed?

Pests are very small, and it’s nearly impossible to seal your home entirely. They can enter through gaps around utility lines, cracks in the foundation so small you can’t see them, worn weatherstripping, and vents.

You’re already doing everything right as far as you can tell. Your home is clean and you don’t leave doors open. All your windows have screens. Yet you find ants on your counter, or perhaps a spider in the bathroom, or even a mouse in the pantry.

It’s maddening, and it’s also completely normal. The reality is that as far as pests are concerned, sealing a home is very close to being an impossible task.

Take a mouse for example—one can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime. An ant can pass through a crack invisible to the naked eye. Most homes, even newer ones, have dozens of potential entry points that are not obvious from inside. The places where utility lines, pipes, and cables enter the house often have small gaps around the openings. Dryer vents and exhaust fans create openings. Weatherstripping around doors and windows degrades over time and creates enough space for insects to enter.

Foundation cracks are a common pathway for many pests to enter. In South Metro Minnesota, where freeze-thaw cycles work on concrete every winter, hairline cracks develop and widen year after year. They're so small that they don't put your structure at risk, but they still can let ants in.

Gaps under doors are one of the most overlooked entry points. The space beneath an exterior door that looks insignificant to you is a wide-open gateway for ants, spiders, and ground-level insects. A door sweep that's worn or missing changes the equation entirely.

Sealing entry points helps, but reducing the pest population around your home is equally important. Fewer pests outside means less pressure at every potential gap. And it also means that pests will have a harder time getting inside and signaling other pests to follow.

If you're tired of pests finding their way into your South Metro Minnesota home, Mosquito Squad of South Metro Minnesota can help. Mosquito Squad treats the perimeter and vegetation around your property, reducing the insect population that's looking for a way inside.
