These large, slow flies have a checkered pattern on their bodies and are often found in homes during cooler months. Horse flies are large, sometimes over an inch long. They’re also quite fast and are especially known for their painful bites. Female horse flies require blood for reproduction. They are commonly found near water, where their larvae develop in moist soil.
