F.A.Q.

Do mice target homes when nearby crops are harvested?

Mice and rats thrive in agricultural fields. But with harvest season, both their food source and shelter quickly vanish and they need some place to go. Your home is nearby.

Agricultural areas are good places for rodents to live. There is plenty of food and places to shelter without a lot of exposure. Harvest season changes that quickly, though.

Standing crops disappear and food availability takes a steep drop. Machinery disturbs the habitat and field mice suddenly start moving into surrounding areas. That might mean a nearby house, garage, shed, or barn. In short, they’re displaced and they need somewhere to go.

For Omaha Metro homes near agricultural land, fall harvest and cooler weather can happen at roughly the same time. That combination means that rodents are under a lot of pressure. You don’t want them inside, so it’s around this time that inspecting the exterior of your home to make sure there are no obvious gaps is especially useful. Look around foundations, door corners, garage seals, utility penetrations, vents, siding transitions, and other seams where small openings may have developed.

Food sources around the property matter too. With crops now unavailable, rodents will be hungry and likely to go after things like bird seed, pet food, livestock feed, grass seed, unsecured trash, and spilled grain. So if rodents are a worry, be sure to store these materials securely and clean up spills when practical.

Inside garages, basements, utility spaces, or sheds, watch for droppings, gnawing, shredded nesting material, damaged bags, or repeated movement along walls. Finding one mouse after a harvest doesn’t necessarily mean there is a larger problem. But if you see a lot, it means it’s that much more important to make sure your buildings are not easily accessible to rodents.
