It’s Tick Time in Nebraska

A recent Health Alert went out in Nebraska due to the prevalence of a tick-borne disease. Ticks can come from tall grass, wooded areas, field mice, rabbits, muskrats, prairie dogs, and other rodents. If you see any of these around your property, there’s a high chance you have ticks. You might think they’re an annoying pest you occasionally have to peel off dogs and kids, but each tick could have a real disease.
Spotted Fever Rickettsia (SFR) & Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF): frequently missed, as symptoms can be mistaken for just a fever when the rash doesn’t appear.
Tularemia: severity is case-based, but through ticks, it develops as an Ulceroglandular, where an ulcer forms at the site of the bite and causes swelling. Labs take extra precautions when dealing with this disease.
Ehrlichiosis: the most reported tick-borne disease in Nebraska. It appears as severe malaise, fever, and headache. Immediate treatment is recommended.
Anaplasmosis: a fatal illness if left untreated and a growing concern in East Nebraska.
Lyme Disease: It can start like any other illness, fever and chill, but if it doesn’t present till later after the infected bite, there can be long-lasting symptoms.
Many of these illnesses seem simple and can hopefully be treated with just antibiotics, but they can also be fatal, so why risk it?

Team Up: Despite all the precautions you take for your own home, talking to neighbors is crucial to mosquito and tick control. Homes with little space between lots can mean ticks at a neighbor’s house can travel to yours. Make safety a neighborhood effort.
