How to Prep Your Home for Pest Season in New Haven & Fairfield County

The thing about New Haven and Fairfield counties is that the pest situation changes depending on which direction you drive. Head toward the Sound and mosquitoes are the headliner. You can thank the salt marshes for that.

Head inland and ticks take over. Wooded residential lots in places like Woodbridge and Shelton put deer, and the deer ticks that hitch rides on them, within feet of your back door.

But most properties around here have a little of both problems, and a smattering of other ones too. So here are some tips you can follow to handle springtime pests before their populations spiral out of control.

Remove Standing Water

Coastal humidity keeps things damp even during dry stretches, which means standing water lasts longer on your property than you'd expect. That means more breeding time for mosquitoes. You can’t do anything about the mosquitoes breeding in the salt marshes, but you can absolutely do something about the ones in your own backyard.

Removing standing water goes a long way here. Clogged gutters are public enemy #1 for standing water on residential properties. But after unclogging gutters, it’s also a good idea to dump saucers, birdbaths, and water-holding kids’ toys. If you have low-lying spots in your yard that just won’t drain, then fixing drainage or regrading can help.

Reduce Tick Habitats

Connecticut ranks second in the nation for Lyme disease. Inland wooded areas in both counties are where tick trouble is worst, and ticks become active well before mosquito season. They can become active as soon as temperatures go above 35, which may very well already have happened by the time you read this.

Clear leaf litter from wooded edges and under shrubs. This single task eliminates the most common tick habitat on residential properties. If stubborn problems persist, you can also create a dry buffer (of mulch or gravel), three feet wide, along the foliage barrier at the edges of your yard.

Beyond that, simple lawn and landscaping care go a long way. Mow the grass, trim the hedges, and make the ticks head for greener, less-manicured pastures.

Seal Entry Points

Mice that overwintered indoors don't leave when it warms up. They breed. A female mouse can produce five to ten litters a year. That can lead to a huge number of mice by spring if they start breeding in late autumn.

No matter what, seal what you find and check for signs of existing activity. That means droppings, gnaw marks, shredded material in quiet corners. Fifteen minutes of caulk and weather stripping can save you weeks of trouble later.

And if you find evidence of a rodent infestation, call for help. That can be very hard to resolve on your own.

Watch out for Spotted Lanternflies & Wasps

This invasive species is spreading like wildfire through the state. Their egg masses look like small patches of dried mud on tree trunks, fence posts, and outdoor furniture. They’re easy to miss if you don’t know to look for them.

If you do find them, scrape them into rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. That alone can knock out 30-50 eggs and stop dozens of adult spotted lanternflies from being born.

Around this time, look out for wasps, as queens emerge from overwintering in spring and immediately begin building. Small starter nests under eaves and soffits are easy to take down in April. By June, they're established colonies with workers that defend them aggressively.
