F.A.Q.

Do rodents look for warm shelter when temperatures drop?

Yes. Cooler weather can make protected structures more attractive to rodents, but they still need a usable entry point to get inside.

Mice and rats need shelter throughout the year. But as temperatures fall in the autumn, rodents start seeking warmer places to live. Garages, basements, crawlspaces, attics, sheds, and wall voids are all better than living outside. In any of these places, they won’t be exposed to the cold and rain, and there’s also a good chance they can get access to food and nesting materials.

Cold weather doesn’t guarantee a rodent problem. Mice still need openings into the structure. Without these openings, they can’t get in. This is why it’s important to pay attention to gaps around garage doors and exterior doors, foundations, vents, utility penetrations, siding, and attached additions. All of these can give rodents perfect routes indoors. Once inside, they may be more likely to stay longer if they happen to find food. To rodents, that means things like pet food, bird seed, trash, and anything in your pantry that is easy to access.

Fall rodent prevention usually starts outside. Walk around the house and look closely at exterior seams and penetrations first. Check door sweeps and garage seals, particularly near the corners. Repair damaged screens and close up gaps as you find them with durable materials.

Then look for signs inside like droppings, gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, damaged food packaging, and repeated nighttime noises like scratching in the walls. Any of these can indicate rodent activity. If you notice any of these, you may have an active rodent problem and need to call a professional.
