F.A.Q.

Do cockroaches move indoors as the weather gets cooler and drier?

Outdoor cockroaches do tend to move toward buildings when temperatures fall. But access to food and water can also play a big part in their presence.

Cockroaches are driven by their search for basic survival needs like moisture or a warm hiding spot. When the weather brings cooler temperatures and drier air, those outdoor resources quickly vanish. A building may provide more stable conditions than an exposed outdoor environment, especially around kitchens, bathrooms, utility areas, garages, drains, and plumbing. And this is especially true once the weather starts to change in the fall.

Indoor sightings, on their own, do not necessarily mean a cockroach just came inside because the temperature dropped. Some cockroach species can already be established indoors and others primarily live outside and occasionally enter through small gaps around doors, utility lines, vents, drains, cracks, and other gaps.

Pay attention to where you tend to see cockroaches. Spotting a single bug by your front door after a heavy storm could easily be nothing more than a random straggler. Finding them repeatedly in your kitchen, especially alongside tiny nymphs or egg cases, points straight to an active indoor infestation.

If you’re worried about cockroaches, start by cleaning up crumbs, grease, and spills. Store pantry foods and pet food securely. Keep trash managed, and address plumbing leaks or other unnecessary moisture when possible. It’s also a good idea to reduce clutter so cockroaches have fewer places to hide.

It helps to also find the ways they’re getting inside and seal them up. Check door sweeps, window frames, utility penetrations, vents, and visible cracks around the structure. Caulk unwanted gaps and replace broken vents or screens as you find them.

Los Angeles doesn’t get very cold, so cockroaches never really stop here. That said, cooler weather changes where they spend most of their time and they do tend to be worse in the fall.
