F.A.Q.

Are ticks active in the fall?

Yes. Fall does not automatically end tick activity, especially where temperatures remain mild.

Ticks don’t stop being active just because it’s a certain time of year. They respond to local conditions. As long as the weather is favorable, they can continue to give you trouble. And in Los Angeles, mild fall weather can allow their activity to continue in brush, leaf litter, tall vegetation, trails, and other suitable habitats.

Conditions close to the ground matter a lot. Shaded vegetation and organic debris can remain cooler and more humid than exposed areas. These can support tick activity even when a day doesn’t feel like summer.

It is easy to forget about ticks once the peak summer season passes, but they remain active in brushy areas well into the cooler months. Whether you are walking the dog or doing yard work, continue wearing protective clothing or using repellents like you would in peak season. This provides excellent defense while outdoors, but you must still make it a habit to check yourself and your pets before settling back inside.

Managing your landscaping is one of the most effective ways to lower the tick population around your home. Focus on maintaining the outdoor spaces you use most frequently by clearing away excessive vegetation or yard debris. Simply keeping the grass mowed and preventing your plants from becoming overgrown goes a long way toward keeping ticks in check.

Remember: a cooler week doesn’t necessarily mean the season is over. Warmer conditions may make ticks active again. If you happen to find a tick on yourself, a pet, or a kid, remove it promptly by pulling upward with tweezers using steady pressure. Prompt removal is recommended.
