F.A.Q.

Do mosquitoes prefer certain areas in my yard?

Yes. Mosquitoes strongly prefer shaded, humid, sheltered areas with dense vegetation. These are the spots that stay cool and damp during the day while they rest between feeding periods.

If mosquitoes seem worse in one part of your yard than another, that’s not a random occurrence. Mosquitoes look for places where they can meet their biological needs, and finding out the spots where they can do this is the first step to doing something about it.

Mosquitoes spend the vast majority of their time resting, not flying. During the day, they tuck into cool, shaded spots where humidity stays high and wind is blocked. That includes places like the underside of leaves on dense shrubs or tall grass along a fence line. The same goes for spaces beneath decks or porches.

The open, sunny center of your lawn is usually the least attractive area to mosquitoes. They dry out in direct sun and struggle to fly in wind. If you're trying to plan an outdoor gathering, positioning it in the sunniest, most open part of your yard helps.

This is why, on a typical Long Island property, mosquitoes tend to be close to shaded property edges, in dense ornamental plantings, under decks and porches, and around sheds and outbuildings. If you have heavily landscaped sections of your yard that always feel worse for mosquitoes than the open lawn, you’re seeing the pattern in action.

The other big mosquito attractant is standing water. Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Anywhere that water can go undisturbed for more than a few days counts. That includes gutters that don’t drain, plant saucers, birdbaths, and even low spots in the yard. These are all places where mosquitoes can lay eggs and start the next generation.
