F.A.Q.

Can exterior pest control alone prevent pests from getting inside?

Exterior treatment certainly helps. Most pests start outdoors, so if you control the population there, fewer will be around to reach your home, but that does not make outdoor pest control a full solution on its own.

Pests live outside. You don’t want them to come inside. So it seems only logical that if you treat them outdoors, you won’t see them indoors. And this is more right than wrong.

There is a wrinkle to be aware of, though. Home perimeter treatment works well because it is applied to the foundation, eaves, window frames, and surrounding vegetation. This creates a treated zone that knocks down crawling and flying pests before they find their way through a gap.

For mosquitoes and ticks, exterior treatment is usually enough. They are primarily outdoor pests as it is. Barrier treatments knock down mosquitoes as they rest on vegetation. Tick treatments knock them down as they rest on ground cover and shaded edges. But for crawling pests, it’s a different story. Ants, spiders, earwigs, and centipedes are constantly looking for ways indoors, which is why they need to be intercepted—otherwise they will freely forage indoors. The goal: block them.

But exterior treatment is not a perfect solution either. It cannot fix pest problems once they are inside, and there are some places that are not typically covered by the treatment too. If mice are entering your home through the roofline, for example, your best bet is then exclusion treatment which involves sealing cracks and preventing future pests from getting inside.
