A majority of the time we get bitten by mosquitoes, all we worry about is an annoying itch that may last for a few days, but these bites can also bring disease. Some dangerous illnesses can be transmitted through an infected mosquito to humans and our pets.
Heartworms
Mosquitoes can carry many things, including Heartworms, a disease mostly found in dogs but also in other household pets like cats and ferrets. Protecting your pets from Heartworms can help protect other pets and animals as well. This disease travels from already infected animals to healthy ones through the bites of mosquitoes. Within 10 to 14 days of the mosquito picking up the diseased blood and larvae, it becomes infectious and can transmit the larvae to other animals through its bite.
Heartworms can live 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats, affecting the health of their lungs and heart. Each year, the mosquito season can mean more worms entering your pet’s system through new bites.
Medication for heartworms exists for dogs, but not so much for cats or other furry friends, so how can you help prevent Heartworms? Mosquito control, and we at Mosquito Squad would love to help you protect your family.
