F.A.Q.

What are the signs of rodent nests?

Look for shredded material in hidden, undisturbed spaces. Mice and rats build nests from paper, insulation, fabric, cardboard, and dried plant material. You'll typically find them behind appliances, inside wall voids, in attic insulation, or tucked into stored boxes.

Finding a rodent nest in your home is unsettling, especially if you didn’t know you had a problem. If you’ve stumbled onto one, or you think you might have, it’s normal to be concerned about it. A nest means rodents aren’t just passing through. It means they live in your home and they’re probably breeding too.

Mouse nests are roughly the size of a softball, loosely woven on the outside and tightly packed on the inside to create an insulated chamber for pups. Rat nests are similar but larger, sometimes using heavier materials. You can most often find them in spots that are dark, quiet, and close to food sources but away from regular human activity.

Shredded or torn material is often the first sign. If insulation in your attic or basement looks pulled apart, or you find bits of chewed paper, fabric, or cardboard concentrated in one area, that's likely nesting material. It’s a good idea to check behind your fridge and stove, under bathroom and kitchen cabinets, and in rarely opened storage boxes.

If you find droppings near the nest, it’s practically certain that you have mice. Mice produce 50 to 75 droppings per day, and you'll find the highest concentrations close to their nesting and feeding sites. Fresh droppings are dark and soft. Older ones are gray and dry. Rats leave fewer droppings, but the ones they leave are larger, usually about half an inch long with blunt ends.

A stale, musty odor is also another common sign. Rodent urine accumulates around nesting sites and along their travel routes. It smells a lot like ammonia and gets stronger as infestations grow.

Gnaw marks on nearby surfaces are also common. Rodent teeth constantly grow, so they gnaw objects the way we might file our own fingernails. So if you find tooth marks on baseboards, wiring, food packaging, and structural materials, you likely have rodents.
