F.A.Q.

Are mosquitoes worse near the shore?

Often, yes. Coastal areas like the Jersey Shore sit near salt marshes, tidal pools, and other brackish-water habitats that produce large mosquito populations, and the higher humidity extends their active hours.

If you moved to the shore expecting ocean breezes would keep mosquitoes away and instead found yourself getting eaten alive every evening, you're not alone.

The Jersey Shore has a lot of mosquitoes, and you can blame geography for that. The coastline is bordered by a lot of salt marshes, which are the kind of low, wet, tidal conditions that produce salt marsh mosquitoes in enormous numbers. These species are aggressive about biting, and they’re active throughout the day too. It also doesn’t help that they can fly several miles from their breeding sites. So a marsh a mile or two away from you might be the source of the mosquitoes biting you on your deck.

Freshwater mosquitoes are also an issue here too. They can breed in stormwater, drainage ditches, and low spots in the yard that hold water after rain. Small containers can give them all the water they need to breed and start the next generation of biting pests.

The other big problem is humidity. Coastal air has more humidity in it, which helps mosquitoes thrive since it prevents them from dehydrating in the sun. That lets them stay active later into the night and start earlier in the morning compared to drier locations.

Even with geography working against you, there are actions you can take to help reduce the problem on your own property. That includes eliminating standing water, keeping vegetation trimmed, and reducing shaded resting areas.
