Finding spiders in your home can be unsettling. House spiders are common and usually do not pose a threat to people. In fact, having a spider or two hanging around can help keep harmful pests away, making spiders a welcome guest for some. But having a spider infestation can be a huge problem. If you see more than a few spiders in your house, let Mosquito Squad take over. We'll make sure the creepy crawlies don't take over your home.
How Do Spiders End Up Indoors?
Spiders are usually looking for two things: a safe place to build a web, and easy access to food. Our homes often provide both. Spiders build their nests in dark corners, behind furniture, under shelves and cabinets, and in any other areas of our homes that don't see high foot traffic. They can enter your home through gaps around doors, windows, siding, and foundations that you may not even notice.
There are steps you can take to make sure your home doesn't attract spiders. In addition to sealing gaps and cracks they use to sneak in, make sure to keep your home clean and free of other insects. Vacuum and sweep corners, nooks, and crannies regularly to remove any webs or egg sacs that spiders may have left. Check areas that aren't used often, like guest rooms, attics, and basements, to make sure spiders aren't moving in there after the webs they build elsewhere are removed.
How to Recognize a Spider Infestation
It may seem obvious, but the first sign of an infestation is seeing more than a few spiders around your home. One or two is normal, but if you're seeing spiders in every corner of every room, you have an infestation on your hands. Spiders tend to make their way inside throughout the year, but they tend to seek indoor spaces more often in colder weather as they look for warm places to nest. Their mating cycle typically takes place from September to late November, meaning they're more active during these months. You might see a few more spiders than usual during the months they're mating, but it still shouldn't be a large number.
Keep an eye out for egg sacs, a sign that an infestation may be incoming. These silk sacs are usually small, round, and a white or cream color. Spiders lay hundreds of eggs in each sac, so make sure to get rid of them as soon as you see them. When sweeping or vacuuming them away, make sure to deposit the debris outside to ensure they don't hatch in your trash can or vacuum cleaner. The more spiders you see in your home, the more webs you'll see in the corners of the more active areas of your home, as all the secret corners are already inhabited. More webs equals more spiders, and more spiders equals an infestation.
