F.A.Q.

How effective are mosquito repellent bracelets?

Studies show that mosquito repellent bracelets and wristbands provide minimal protection. They may slightly reduce bites on the hand wearing the bracelet, but they don't create a large zone of protection around your body.

If you bought a pack of repellent bracelets so you could avoid using spray-on repellents, it’s entirely reasonable to be disappointed. They're marketed well and the idea is appealing. The idea of being able to wear a bracelet and forget about mosquitoes is an attractive one. But sadly, the science doesn’t support the claim.

Repellent bracelets typically contain citronella, geraniol, or other plant-based oils infused into a silicone or fabric band. The thinking is that the oils will evaporate from the bracelet and create a protective cloud. But in reality, the amount of repellent released isn’t much, and it doesn’t deter mosquitoes beyond a few inches from the band itself.

Consumer Reports and multiple independent studies have tested these products and found that they provide little to no protection. Mosquitoes instead will bite areas of exposed skin that aren’t immediately adjacent to the bracelet. That’s bad news for your ankles, neck, face, and arms.

This is also true for clip-on devices and ultrasonic repellers. Some clip-on devices use a metofluthrin cartridge and battery-powered fan, and those perform better than passive bracelets. But even still, they can't match the coverage of a properly applied skin repellent.

What does work for personal protection is an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus applied directly to exposed skin. Permethrin-treated clothing is another effective way to shield yourself from mosquitoes.

For children, the CDC and AAP recommend DEET-based repellents at up to 30% concentration for kids over two months of age. Picaridin is another option. Oil of lemon eucalyptus shouldn’t be used on children under the age of three.
