What Attracts Spiders to Your House?

You clean regularly. You don’t leave food out. So why do spiders keep showing up inside your Fredericksburg home?

The answer usually comes down to three things: food, moisture, and shelter. Spiders don’t wander in by accident. They follow a trail of opportunity. And whether it’s a quiet corner, a steamy bathroom, or a porch light left on overnight, your home might be more welcoming to spiders than you think.

As Fredericksburg spider control experts, here is a list of common reasons we see spiders gravitate toward homes—and what you can do to stop sending out invites.

1. Insects attract spiders.

Spiders go where the food is. If your home has flies, gnats, ants, or even the occasional moth buzzing around, it’s basically a buffet. Outdoor lighting is a major culprit here, especially when it comes to porch lights. Bright lights draw insects, and insects draw spiders. That’s why you’ll often find webs in corners near your front door, garage, or patio light.

Want fewer spiders? Cut down on their food supply. Swap out bright bulbs for warm-spectrum or motion-activated lighting and turn off lights when not in use.

2. Moisture draws in prey, and spiders follow.

Spiders don’t drink from puddles, but they do love humidity. Damp environments attract the kinds of insects spiders eat, which is why basements, laundry rooms, and poorly ventilated bathrooms often become spider territory.

Take a steamy shower with the door closed, and you’re basically ringing the dinner bell. Open the windows, run the exhaust fan, or crack the door after bathing. Keeping moisture under control is one of the easiest ways to make your home less appealing to bugs, and by extension, to spiders.

3. Indoor plants provide shelter for spiders.

Houseplants add life and color to your space. But unfortunately, they can also attract eight-legged residents. Plants provide shelter, humidity, and hiding places for bugs, especially if they’re densely clustered or overwatered. For a spider, that looks like home sweet home.

You don’t have to ditch your plants, but spacing them out, trimming dead foliage, and checking for webs can help reduce the chances of a spider setting up shop among the leaves.

4. Yard debris near the house invites spiders in.

Spiders don’t usually start inside. They move in from outside. And clutter near the perimeter of your home gives them plenty of reasons to stick around. Wood piles, leaf debris, old planters, and unused furniture all offer dark, undisturbed shelter where spiders can hide and reproduce.

Keep the area around your foundation clear. Move firewood away from the house, rake leaves, and store seasonal items in sealed containers off the ground.

5. Lack of cleaning creates hiding spots.

It doesn’t take long for spiders to find a forgotten corner. Eaves, under outdoor furniture, attic rafters, and crawlspaces are ideal hiding spots, especially if you’re not disturbing them regularly.

Make a habit of sweeping away webs, wiping down corners, and checking storage spaces. A consistent cleaning routine not only reduces the number of hiding spots, it helps eliminate the other insects spiders rely on for food.

6. You don’t have a pest control plan in place.
