What Attracts Ants Inside Clean Homes?

You keep a clean house. Every counter is wiped down, the floors swept, and food put away in containers. Labeled, no less.

That makes it all the more galling when ants come marching in, two by two, along your kitchen baseboards. As if they owned the place!

If this sounds familiar, it’s definitely not your imagination. Clean homes get ants too, and often for reasons easy to overlook.

Ants Are Attracted to Moisture

Most people think food is what draws ants indoors. Food certainly matters, and you would hardly want to leave fruit platters on your kitchen counters for days on end. But moisture is the number one reason ants invade clean homes, and it's the one most people overlook entirely.

You might have a leaky pipe under your bathroom sink. Or you could have condensation forming around window frames. Maybe you have some dampness in the basement. Your shower could increase your home’s humidity if the bathroom isn’t ventilated well.

Ants love situations like these, and they send out scouts constantly to find them. When a single scout finds a reliable moisture source inside your home, it lays a pheromone trail back to the colony. Within even a few hours, you could have a line of ants heading straight for your bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen sink. And it has nothing to do with crumbs.

Tiny Amounts of Food Are Enough

Ants can find food residue that is so small that humans wouldn’t be able to notice it. A thin grease film on your stovetop, crumbs in the bottom of your toaster tray, or a sticky spot on the inside of a cabinet door where something dripped months ago might just be enough.

Pet food and water bowls left out overnight are also another common attractant. Even if you pick up your dog’s food bowl after meals, your dog isn’t exactly eating with a knife and a fork. Small amounts of food and water will no doubt be on the ground.

Older Homes Have More Entry Points

Fredericksburg has a lot of character. Historic homes, established neighborhoods, and properties with decades of settling. All of that character comes with gaps.

Older homes have more entry points for ants than newer ones. Foundations crack from decades of settling, door sweeps wear down, and gaps develop around window frames. Even the openings where utility lines run are often big enough for ants to enter because they’re so tiny. Odorous house ants and pavement ants, both very common in Virginia, can squeeze into cracks even the keenest human eye can hardly see.

You can seal large entry points with caulk and replace worn weather stripping, which always helps. But you won’t be able to find and seal every gap in an older home.

Carpenter Ants Play by Different Rules

To a carpenter ant, “carpentry” means nesting in damp wood. They won’t eat it like termites do. But they can excavate little galleries inside of it to house their colony.

If your Fredericksburg home has any moisture-damaged framing, carpenter ants might be attracted to that. And there are plenty of reasons you might have this problem, ranging from an old roof leak to a bathroom with poor ventilation to a crawlspace with drainage issues

Carpenter ants may be attracted to that damaged wood regardless of how clean your home is. So they might not be after your food. They might be after your home itself.

Need Ant Control That Works in Fredericksburg, VA?

Ant control in clean homes requires addressing the real attractants, not just surface cleaning. It helps to fix moisture problems first (pipes, ventilation, drainage, and so on). But if problems persist, professional treatment can help. The ant colony you’re dealing with is most likely outside. So to treat it, you need a way to disrupt the colony—not something DIY treatments are effective at doing.
