F.A.Q.

Can I still have ticks if I'm not near a wooded area?

Yes. Ticks don't need a forest. They can establish themselves in any yard that offers shade, moisture, ground cover, and wildlife hosts passing through.

You might have hoped your suburban lot was too far from the woods for ticks. Or at least that it was too well cared for to be home to them. So finding one on your skin when you haven’t left the property is always jarring.

The connection between ticks and forests is real but overstated. Ticks are not particularly fussy when it comes to accommodations. They only need three things: humidity to keep from drying out, vegetation to climb onto while waiting for a host, and animals to feed on. A neighborhood with squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, or the occasional wandering deer checks that last box easily. And most landscaped yards in the Franklin and Framingham area have plenty of the first two.

Ground cover plants, mulch beds, ornamental grasses, and shade gardens can all hold moisture at ground level. And that can create a tick habitat. Ditto for stone walls with leaf debris and a row of hostas along the foundation. Even a neglected patch of foliage between your fence and your neighbor’s can give ticks a place to live. They won’t chase you, and instead they’ll just wait until you get close and snag onto your leg. (This charming behavior is called questing.)

Birds are another vector people overlook. Migratory and resident birds carry ticks across landscapes with no regard for tree lines or property boundaries. A robin hopping through your yard can take a flight faster than you could get through security at the airport.

Keeping your yard less hospitable to ticks always helps. Raking leaves, trimming low branches, and reducing ground cover in high-traffic areas all make a difference. If you want to go deeper into this subject, you can always read about the 6 C's of tick control.

But if your yard has tick trouble even though you’re doing your best, Mosquito Squad of Franklin & Framingham can help. Mosquito Squad provides tick control treatments that target the shaded, humid zones where ticks hide. A technician will inspect your property to identify the specific conditions driving tick presence and then treat where it will have the most impact. Then they come back every 21 days to make sure your protection never lapses.
