Why Tick Control Matters: A True Pet Story

Ticks are not always the first pests we think about in El Paso. Mosquitoes are such a big problem, after all. But ticks can be devastating.
Ticks can be so dangerous in fact – they simply should not be overlooked or counted out. These tiny, very obscure parasites can harm both people and pets. The serious, sometimes life-threatening effects of Lyme disease shines a light on the importance of effective tick control solutions.
We want to share this story of a beloved dog whose health battle brings to the forefront the potential dangers tick encounters.
From a Pet’s Mystery Illness to Lyme Disease Diagnosis
Only two weeks ago, a happy family dog named Ron began showing sudden and very alarming symptoms. He was constantly drinking water and excessively urinating, which developed into vomiting and refusing food altogether. His family rushed him to the vet, where he received initial treatment, but his condition continued to decline.
After days away from home in the hospital, IV treatments, and a battery of tests, Ron’s bloodwork showed severe kidney damage, liver issues, and additional signs that something was very wrong.
Because Lyme disease was deemed “rare in our area,” veterinarians did not at first suspect it. However, after being tested by an internal medicine specialist, the result for Lyme disease was positive. The tick-borne illness had attacked poor Ron’s kidneys, leaving him fighting for his life.
Thankfully, with strong treatment and ongoing care, Ron is now on the road to recovery. His family is grateful to finally have answers, but their nightmare highlights just how sneaky and devastating ticks can be.
What Lyme Disease Can Do to Our Pets
Lyme disease is no longer just a “northern problem.” Warmer weather patterns, increased travel, and shifting tick populations mean that cases are now spreading across the United States – including Texas and New Mexico.
In pets, Lyme disease can cause:
- Kidney failure (like in Ron’s case)
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Vomiting and dehydration
- Lameness and painful joints
- Lethargy and fever
There is a Lyme Disease Vaccine for Dogs – But
As is the case with vaccines, the canine Lyme disease inoculation is not 100% effective – much less so, in fact. What’s more, it will not be effective for every dog or different types of dogs, and protection offered can be short-lived.
It’s more important that we work with our pets’ veterinarian to formulate the best tick treatment plan. The importance of veterinary intervention on the matter cannot be stressed enough, as treatment plans must be matched to their overall constitution.
