They’re creepy, they’re crawly, they’re . . . the vampires of the bug world. Ticks are nobody’s friends and unlike vampires, the bite of a tick will not make one immortal – quite the opposite, actually. They transmit all kinds of terrible diseases, including Lyme disease which, as you probably know, is all over the Northeast. It’s so bad here that Massachusetts officially declared it an epidemic in 2005. In 2017, ticks were so bad that Boston 25 News called it a “tick explosion.” There are other bad tick-borne diseases here, though, that aren’t Lyme. Things like Babesiosis, which is dangerous to both humans and dogs, and the very scary Powassan virus, which is on the rise.
Recently, the CDC released a report that between 2006 and 2016, diseases from ticks and mosquitoes have more than tripled. That’s enough to make anyone want to sequester themselves and never want to go outside again. But we don’t want you to do that, and it’s safe to say you probably don’t, either.
