F.A.Q.

Do natural mosquito treatments really work?

Professional-grade natural treatments outperform DIY natural treatments. That’s because the formulation, concentration, and application method all determine whether the answer is “yes” or “no.”

You want to spend time outside without being bitten, but you also don't love the idea of synthetic chemicals being sprayed across the yard where your kids play and your dog rolls around. So it’s only reasonable to wish there were a natural alternative.

Natural mosquito treatments generally rely on plant-derived active ingredients. These include essential oils like rosemary, peppermint, lemongrass, geraniol, and botanical compounds like pyrethrin, which is extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. These compounds all have insecticidal and repellent properties. In fact, pyrethrin is very effective at disrupting mosquito nervous systems on contact.

But the catch comes down to longevity. Natural compounds break down quickly when exposed to sunlight, heat, and moisture. A treatment using essential oils or natural pyrethrin may need reapplication within 2 weeks rather than 3.

Professional-grade natural treatments outperform anything available at a hardware store. That’s because the formulation is more carefully controlled and the concentration of effective ingredients is higher, but also because the one applying the treatment will be trained in doing so properly. A trained applicator using professional natural products and targeting the right areas will provide better results than a homeowner doing DIY mosquito control with an essential oil spray bottle.

A lot of what makes treatments work, natural or traditional, comes down to how they are applied. Mosquitoes hide in humid, shaded spots during the day and they breed in standing water. Treatments need to be applied to areas where they rest and breed in order to work on a population level, no matter what the ingredient label says.
