Cape Cod’s Tick Problem — What You’re Dealing With

The Cape’s mix of salt marshes, wooded trails, scrub oak, and conservation land creates conditions where ticks thrive across all four seasons. Deer ticks (blacklegged ticks) are the most common and the primary carrier of Lyme disease in the region — In a 2015–2019 Massachusetts study of human-biting ticks, about 39% of adult deer ticks carried the Lyme disease bacterium. Nymphal deer ticks are active from early May through early August and are easy to miss.

Lone Star ticks were first documented on Cape Cod in 2015 and are now established across the Cape. Unlike deer ticks, Lone Star ticks can trigger Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) — a red meat allergy that produces reactions hours after eating, in some cases severe. As of June 2026, 16 AGS cases had been reported on Cape Cod. Other tick-borne illnesses on the Cape include babesiosis and anaplasmosis, which deer ticks can carry, and ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and STARI, which Barnstable County links to Lone Star ticks.

Our Tick Control Services on Cape Cod

Cape Cod Mosquito Squad’s tick treatments target the low-lying vegetation, leaf litter, brush edges, and shaded zones where ticks rest and wait for a host. Our trained technicians focus on the areas that matter most — not just open lawn.

We use EPA-registered products applied by trained technicians per label instructions. These products are non-toxic and environmentally protective. We also use 3 natural products for those who want an alternative approach.

We offer two treatment options, kept separate:

Traditional Barrier Treatment — EPA-registered products applied by trained technicians per label instructions, targeting tick harborage zones along property edges, mulch beds, and shaded vegetation. Treatments are scheduled on a recurring basis to help maintain control through tick season, especially spring and into fall, when adult deer ticks remain active above approximately 40°F.

Natural Treatment Option — We use 3 natural products for customers seeking an alternative approach. Care is taken to avoid treating blooming plants that attract bees. Offered as a separate service from our traditional barrier program.

Once the treatment has dried, your family and pets can return to the yard. All services are backed by our Satisfaction Guarantee. For more information, including this guarantee, check out the Mosquito Squad® Plus website https://www.mosquitosquad.com/cape-cod/ or ask the franchisee for details.

Tick Season on Cape Cod — When to Start

Tick activity on Cape Cod runs longer than most people expect. Nymphal ticks are active from early May through early August. Adult ticks are active from September through May, and the National Park Service reports adults peak in mid-to-late fall. In the Northeast, Lone Star ticks are most active from late May to late August, with larvae typically active from July through September (Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases).

Starting treatment in early spring and maintaining routine visits through fall provides the most consistent coverage. Your Cape Cod Mosquito Squad technician will assess your property and recommend a schedule based on what’s actually present.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tick Control on Cape Cod

What Tick Species Are Common on Cape Cod?

The three most prevalent human-biting ticks on Cape Cod are the deer tick (blacklegged tick), the American dog tick, and the increasingly established Lone Star tick. Co-infection is becoming more common, with ticks now carrying two or even three different diseases. Each species carries different disease risks, which is why identification and targeted treatment matter.

How Often Do Tick Control Treatments Need to Be Scheduled?

Treatment frequency depends on your property, and most Cape Cod properties are on a recurring schedule through the active tick season, from early spring through late fall. Adult deer ticks can remain active through winter above approximately 40°F, so year-round awareness should inform your plan. Your Cape Cod Mosquito Squad technician will assess your property and recommend a schedule.

When Can My Children and Pets Return to the Yard After Treatment?

Once the treatment has dried, your family and pets can return to the yard. Drying time depends on weather conditions. We use EPA-registered products applied by trained technicians per label instructions. These products are non-toxic and environmentally protective. We also use 3 natural products for those who want an alternative approach.

Does Cape Cod Mosquito Squad Treat for Lone Star Ticks Specifically?

Yes. Our barrier treatments target the vegetation edges, brush lines, and leaf litter where Lone Star ticks — and all tick species — rest between hosts. If you have concerns about Lone Star tick exposure or Alpha-gal Syndrome risk on your property, contact us online to discuss your specific situation.

What Is Alpha-Gal Syndrome, and Is It a Risk on Cape Cod?

Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergic condition triggered by a Lone Star tick bite. The bite sensitizes the body to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in mammalian meats like beef, pork, and lamb. Reactions — which can range from hives to anaphylaxis — occur hours after eating red meat, making the connection easy to miss. Massachusetts made AGS reportable starting April 1, 2026, requiring providers and labs to report confirmed and suspected cases. Learn more in our post on Lone Star ticks and Alpha-gal Syndrome on Cape Cod.
